REGIONAL DISTRIBUTION HUB TO BE DEVELOPED IN PULAU INDAH
Selangor Industry & Trade News : Volume 1/No.3 January -April 2003

A mega distribution hub for the region is to be developed in Pulau Indah, Port Klang.

The Pulau Indah Regional Distribution Hub will be developed by the Port Klang Authority (PKA) on a 1000-acre site next to Westport. The project will to be completed in two phases.

PKA will be applying to the Ministry of Finance to have the project area gazetted as a free zone.

Phase 1 of the project involves 500 acres which have been reclaimed. Infrastructure works are scheduled to begin in February 2003.

PKA General Manager Datin Paduka O.C. Phang said, "The development of distribution is in line with the government's objective of making Port Klang a regional distribution base as well as a trade and logistics centre. This in turn will enhance the port's
transshipment trade.

"The development is conceptualized as a mixed development. It will not only have manufacturing activities but also serves as regional distribution centres for companies. These activities will be supported by commercial and logistics services so that the development will be a self-contained area.

"The distribution hub will offer a wide variety of services and facilities and conducive infrastructure for manufacturing and distribution supported by quality, value-added services. Another plus for the project is its location. The project components consist of:
" A multi-storey intelligent building, which will serve as distribution hub's business centre. Facilities in the building are conceptualized for usage as operations and trade offices as well as for conventions and trade exhibitions.
" Transshipment facilities which will be offered for lease.
* Light industries facilities comprising terrace, semi-detached and detached
factories which will be for sale.
" Vacant lots for development of detached and semi-detached medium industries facilities. Lots will be sold to buyers to develop their own facilities.
" Vacant lots to be leased for construction of warehouse.

The project is modelled after the very successful Jebel Ali Free Zone, the major distribution hub for the Middle East. JAFZ is reported to have 1,400 companies located in it including multinationals such as Unilever, Nokia, Fuji, Shell, Matsushita, Nissan, BP Amoco and Ciba-Geigy.
Jebel Ali Free Trade Zone International, the operator of the Jebel Ali Free Zone, might be brought in as a partner in the project.
